Did you know that from the late 1860s, and well in to the 20th century, the West Bay shoreline was fully industrialized? This image, taken after 1894, is the view from the top of a water tower situated approximately at the site of today’s Holiday Inn. The railroad track heads west approximately on the path of today’s Grandview Parkway. Front Street can be seen to the left of the picture. Clean up of what is now Clinch Park began in the late 1930s led by Floyd Clinch and Con Foster. Each week the History Center of Traverse City provides a photograph from its archives. The History Center of Traverse City’s website is available to the public at www.traversehistory.org. Archive photos also are available at the History Center, 322 Sixth St.
