News From 100 Years Ago: 05/12/2014

n HARRY T. ELDRED, Brakeman on the M. & N. E., was injured so badly that he died in the hospital in Manistee. Eldred, 30 of W. Eleventh Street in Traverse City, suffered his injuries while switching rail cars at Kaleva. His leg was caught and he suffered serious damage to both legs, hand, wrist and fingers as many train cars ran over him. He succumbed to shock from his injuries. He leaves four children and a wife who is in “delicate condition.”

n THE U.S. GOVERNMENT and survey boat has just completed making a trip through the Bay. Its purpose was painting and resetting the buoys.

n THE STEAMER OF MISSOURI arrived in port in Traverse City, being the first boat of the Northern Michigan Transportation line to do so. A large amount of merchandise was left for local merchants.

n WARNING! All drivers of heavy trucks and automobiles are given warning to drive slowly over wooden bridges in the city as they are in a weakened condition. Driving too fast could cause a serious accident, Joseph Sleder, Commission of Public Works announces.

n THE LIGHTWEIGHT TEAMS of Oak Park and Union Street schools played a game of Newcombe yesterday afternoon. Oak Park won by a score of 92 to 69.

n ANNUAL SENIOR EXCURSION will be held Saturday, May 23. The boat will leave the Northern Michigan Transportation dock at six and return after the sports of the day.

n The Northern Michigan Track Meet will be one of the big attractions. It is not known which steamer will be used — either the Missouri or the Illinois.
