Suspect drives stolen vehicle through garage door

TRAVERSE CITY — A bizarre string of crimes in East Bay Township ended when Grand Traverse County sheriff's deputies arrested a man they found screaming in a roadway.

Collin Paul Biondo, 27, of Grand Traverse County, faces felony charges in 86th District Court of carjacking, first-degree home invasion, armed robbery and assault with a dangerous weapon.

Grand Traverse County sheriff's Capt. Randy Fewless said deputies believe Biondo is the same man a Sleights Road resident spotted meandering near a relative's house Friday morning.

The resident drove to the home, confronted the man and told him to leave. Fewless said the resident tried to drive away, but the suspect had other plans.

"All the sudden he starts to ram her vehicle," he said. "He starts yelling to her that he wants her vehicle and he has a gun."

Fewless said the suspect ran into a nearby home and into its garage before the door shut. He said the suspect got into a vehicle, started it and backed it through the closed garage door.

Authorities believe the suspect drove down Gibbs Road before he decided to abandon the vehicle.

Fewless said deputies later found the vehicle parked and partially covered by an overturned picnic table. He said the suspect entered a nearby cottage, crept into a bedroom in which its residents slept, and nabbed their vehicle keys and a wallet.

The vehicle's complicated ignition stymied the suspect and it appears he gave up. Fewless said about two hours after the spree started deputies responded to calls from several nearby residents about a man lying in Hobbs Highway.

"When the deputies got there he was actually kneeling in (the) roadway and screaming," he said.

Fewless said deputies never found a gun. He said Biondo told deputies he took drugs at some point.

"He told the deputy it was all like a bad dream and made mention of crystal meth," he said.

Grand Traverse County Prosecutor Bob Cooney said his staff added a home invasion charge after reviewing the case.

Biondo remains in Grand Traverse County's jail on a $500,000 bond. He's scheduled to appear for a preliminary examination on May 12.
