SCHAUMBURG, Ill. — Traverse City goes into the All-Star break on a winning note after a 5-3 victory Sunday over playoff contender Schaumburg.
The win gives the Beach Bums (31-20) two victories in the three-game series and assures they’ll stay in first place until at least Friday, when the second half of the season starts at home against Windy City.
Jose Vargas hit his 10th home run of the season in the first to stake Traverse City to an early 2-0 lead. Andrew Cohn legged out an infield single, but was lifted for pinch runner Taylor Wrenn.
Cohn — who played in just two games after coming back from an injury, but was 2-for-5 — missed from June 3 to July 11.
The Boomers (30-22) knotted it back up with single runs in the second and third innings off starter Johnny Omahen, who exteded his streak to eight consecutive appearances with 3 or fewer earned runs.
In the fourth, Carlo Testa singled, stole second, advanced to third on a catcher’s error and scored on Zach Kometani’s sacrifice fly. Scott Woodward scored in a similar way in the fifth, walking, stealing second and advancing to third on an error by the catcher and then coming across on Wrenn’s RBI single.
Chris Cowell led off the seventh with his third home run of the season for a 5-3 lead. Chase Burch had two hits for TC.
Omahen gave up six hits and two walks in six innings, striking out five. Mike Devine tossed 2.1 scoreless innings and Nick Capito retired the game’s final two batters to close it out.
