Paterson and Patterson goalies at Wings camp

TRAVERSE CITY — Baseball has it's "Who's on First?" routine.

The Detroit Red Wings Development Camp has its own version. It's called, "Which goalie is it?"

With two of the five goaltenders at camp this week sharing nearly the exact same name, coaches and trainers had to come up with a way to differentiate between Jake Paterson and Jake Patterson.

"They call him Patty and they call me Patty as well, so I think we're going to have to come up with something this week to differentiate ourselves," said Paterson, a 21013 third-round draft pick.

"I've been playing with him my whole life, growing and playing in tournaments down south," said Patterson, a camp invitee. "I played against him a few times this year in our league. It took me a few minutes to realize when I got invited here that there was going to be two Jake Pattersons. It's pretty funny.

"I don't know what they can come up with, but they'll have to do something to separate us."

Hence, counting Ts.

Trainers started calling Paterson "One T" and Patterson "Two T."

Development camp officials wisely put the two on opposite teams so they wouldn't be in the work-outs or practices at the same time.

"What are the odds there are two Jake Pattersons — both goalies, both at the same development camp?" Paterson said. "It's pretty ironic and kind of funny, too. We're both here to prove that we belong on the team. I'm not too concerned about the names."

Both goaltenders play in the Western Conference of the Ontario Hockey League — and their teams met up in the first round last year's playoffs.
