KALKASKA — A man shot and killed himself after he assaulted two of his family members inside their Garfield Township home in Kalkaska County, authorities said.
Michigan State Police responded to a report of an aggravated assault with a firearm on Friday at 9 p.m. Investigation showed a 58-year-old man with mental health issues broke into his brother and sister-in-law’s residence and tried to shoot them with a rifle.
The two victims escaped after a lengthy struggle and called 911. A state police team was called because it was believed the suspect was barricaded inside the residence with the rifle and had made several threats toward family and others.
Authorities said the suspect’s body was found on the residence’s rear porch with a single, self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. He was pronounced dead at the scene and the incident remains under investigation.
