Northern Michigan now has 35 safer boaters on the waterways thanks to Dewitt Marine of Bellaire and the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary.
The auxiliary taught a one-day boater safety class at Dewitt Marine that covered boating safety, safety equipment, emergency procedures, navigation rules and aids, boating regulations and charting. Following the class, the 35 attendees completed an exam in order to obtain a Boater Safety Certification certificate and card. Exam results were impressive with a 98 percent passing rate. Of the 35 participants, 30 were children between the ages of 10 and 17.
Dewitt plans to continue to offer a boater safety class each spring, typically the Saturday of Father’s Day weekend.
