Authorities ID man found in Boardman Lake

TRAVERSE CITY — Authorities identified a man who died after he disappeared while boating in Boardman Lake.

Buddy Edward Schardt, 60, of Traverse City, disappeared in the lake early Saturday afternoon. He was boating with two other men when he decided to take a swim in the southeastern portion of the lake.

Schardt became distressed while swimming, Grand Traverse Sheriff Tom Bensely said. Another man on Schardt's boat, Brian Smith, 40, of Traverse City, jumped in to help but became distressed himself as the unanchored boat drifted away from the two swimmers.

Smith was able to get back to the boat.

Search team members found Schardt under the lake's surface on Saturday about 8:30 p.m.
