GLEN ARBOR — A U.S. Coast Guard rescue helicopter crew pulled two kayakers out of choppy Lake Michigan waters.
The rescue took place Sunday evening after a sailing vessel rescued three kayakers near Manitou Island who said they were too fatigued to complete their journey. They also said two kayakers remained missing.
A helicopter crew spotted the missing kayakers after a 20-minute search. One hung onto a capsized kayak in 55-degree water and the other signaled to the air crew with his paddle.
A rescue swimmer found the kayaker in the water suffered from symptoms of hypothermia. Crews hoisted the kayakers onto the helicopter in a basket.
