---- — TC East advances to quarterfinals
ISHPEMING — The Traverse City East Little League team advanced to quarterfinal play here today.
The team finished 1-2 in its pool over the weekend, losing to Taylor West 3-2, Grosse Pointe 3-2 and beating Iron Mountain 7-0. Both losses came in the final inning. Grosse Pointe won the pool with a 3-0 record. The other three teams finished 1-2, but Traverse City advanced since it allowed just six runs in the three games.
East will face West Portage today.
In the loss to Taylor, Artie Dutmers and Josh Bradfield pounded out two hits apiece. Dylan Liggett homered. Against Grosse Pointe, Danny Passinault doubled and Luke Klug pitched four innings of shutout ball. In the win over Iron Mountain, Dutmers collected three hits while Passinault homered. Dutmers scored twice and winning pitcher Tyler Smith threw three shutout innings. Marty McDonald had four bunt singles in three games.
Wolves improveto 3-4
TRAVERSE CITY — The Traverse City Wolves improved to 3-4 with a 33-12 Great Midwest Football League win over the Grand Rapids Thunder on Saturday night.
The Wolves led 27-0 at half.
Traverse City passed for 209 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for 119 yards and two more scores.
The Wolves next travel to Detroit to take on Wayne County Bengals (2-5). The Bengals lost to the defending champion Detroit Ravens 48-0 on Saturday.
GRAYLING — Andrew Triebold and Steve Lajoie won the Spike’s Challenge, a prelude to the AuSable River Canoe Marathon, on Sunday.
The two finished the race from Grayling to McMasters Bridge in 2:38:11. Steve Corlew and Cameron McClane took second in 2:44:48 and Colin Hunter and Jason Hatfield third in 2:46:47.
Pop Warner sign-up is underway
TRAVERSE CITY — The Traverse City Youth Football Association (YMCA Pop Warner) registration is now underway.
Parents can register their child by visiting www.tcyouthfootball.org. The fee is $100 and includes full uniform, protective equipment, three weeks of pre-season practices and six games (pending weather). There is also an open house at the YMCA tonight where parents can ask questions and register in person. The Open House will run from 6-7 p.m. at the YMCA.
The registration deadline is July 31.
