Northern Notes: Local woman celebrates 100th birthday

Birthday congratulations go out to Helen (McCall) Taylor-Fish, who celebrated her 100th birthday June 8, 2013, at the Traverse City home of her daughter, Jackie Canute. More than 40 relatives attended the party in her honor.

Helen was born June 8, 1913, in Charlevoix to John and Myrtle (Richardson) McCall. She has been a Traverse City resident since she moved here with her family in 1924. She married the late Willard Taylor in 1932 and the couple had two children. Helen also has five grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. She also has a younger sister who is 88.

Helen never smoked, drove a car, or wore slacks and was in her 80s before she visited a fast food restaurant. She continues to live independently, prepares her own meals and does her own banking. Her favorite quotes about her age are, “You won’t go until it’s your time,” and, “100 is just a number.”

In May, a letter from Sarah Derry was published in the Record-Eagle acknowledging Wendy’s in Interlochen for going above and beyond regular customer service.

Sarah’s hectic day included a trip to the doctor with her son. After the appointment, he told his mother that he hadn’t eaten all day and she pulled into the drive-through at Wendy’s to get him something from the value menu because all she had was change. The employee at the window kindly pointed out that for 40 cents more Sarah could up-size her order. Sarah responded that she didn’t have the extra money and didn’t realize that the employee had increased the order until her son mentioned on the way home that he had 10 nuggets instead of the six nuggets Sarah had ordered.

The attendant at the Wendy’s window was Christina Byron, who wrote back to say that what she did wasn’t an individual act of kindness, but an act of teamwork. Christina wrote that both she and her manager on duty, Misty, felt that up-sizing the nuggets for Sarah’s son was the right and proper thing to do.
