Prosecutor charges Caldwell with manslaughter

TRAVERSE CITY — Grand Traverse County Prosecutor Bob Cooney authorized criminal charges against a Traverse City man who fatally shot his girlfriend.

Robert Lee-Allen Caldwell, 33, faces charges of involuntary manslaughter, discharge of a firearm while under the influence of alcohol causing death, felony firearm and resisting and obstructing a police officer. Caldwell told authorities he accidentally shot and killed his girlfriend Monica June Anderson, 28, during a suicide attempt in their Aero Park Drive apartment on Nov. 19.

A police investigation did not find sufficient evidence to indicate Caldwell intended to kill Anderson, Cooney said.

"I'm alleging, apart from being intoxicated (Caldwell), was grossly negligent," Cooney said.
