10k run to benefit TCAPS arts programs

TRAVERSE CITY -- The Traverse City Area Public Schools Alumni Network is calling on community members to lace up their running shoes in support of TCAPS' arts programs.

The alumni group is hosting a run on April 26 called the Crosstown Campus 10k to promote the growing alumni network and to raise money for TCAPS' fine and performing arts programs.

Network member Wendy Nienhouse said the run is the group's largest event yet.

Neinhouse isn't an alumna, but she married a TCAPS graduate and sent both of her daughters to the school district. She said anyone can participate in the run and support the district's programs, whether they attended TCAPS schools or not.

The run begins at 7:30 a.m. at Traverse City West Senior High School. Runners will travel past the original district high school that is now Central Grade School, head along West Grand Traverse Bay and end up at Traverse City Central High School.

"What a unique thing we can do to really highlight the landscape of our district," Nienhouse said.

The run will be timed, but it is not a race. The point is to give back to a program that gives so much to students, Nienhouse said.

"The fine and performing arts, the performing arts especially, they really need to benefit from any opportunity they can because it's not always an area that receives a lot of funding," she said.

The registration fee is $40 but will increase as the event nears. To register before April 26, visit Athletes also will be able to register in person on the day of the run.

The alumni network was established in 2012 by a group of TCAPS supporters and alumni to both serve as a resource for alumni and to facilitate ways for the community to give back to the school district.

The group hopes to continue to expand and has filed for designation as a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization so it can start to apply for grants.
