• In honor of the 90th birthday of Robert P. Griffin on Nov. 6, the Robert P. Griffin Hall of Justice on Washington Street in Traverse City unveiled a photo exhibit depicting Griffin’s distinguished public service career.
Griffin served in World War II in the U.S. Army (1943-1946) and earned two Battle Stars – Europe; served as a U.S. Congressman (1956-1966 Traverse City and 9th Congressional District); U.S. Senator (1966-1978, Minority Whip 1969-1977); Michigan Supreme Court Justice (1987-1994); and Assigned Justice of the Michigan Court of Appeals (1996, 1998 and 2002).
Robert P. Griffin was the honored recipient of the State Bar of Michigan’s Distinguished Public Servant Award in 2003. In 2006, Grand Traverse County dedicated its new Hall of Justice in his name. Bob Griffin and his wife Marge, who have been married for 66 years, live in Traverse City.
• The Florida Writers Association announced that Bridget Callaghan of Traverse City and Jeff Swesky of St. Augustine, Fla. won prestigious Royal Palm Literary Awards. Their winning entry, “Thornetta: The Musical,” won first place for Unpublished, Stage Play. They received a second award, the prestigious Dahris Clair Memorial Award, given for outstanding work in stage play, teleplay and screen play.
