College Night

SCOTTVILLE — Representatives from more than 40 colleges, universities and military organizations will participate in West Shore Community College’s College Night.

The event will be held from 6:30-8 p.m., Oct. 7, in WSCC’s Recreation Center. It is for high school students, their parents and anyone interested in comparing a variety of programs offered by colleges or universities. Financial aid information also will be available. WSCC students wishing to transfer will be able to meet with college and university representatives from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. in the Schoenherr Campus Center atrium. For details, call 843-5503.

LIWdA speaker

GLEN ARBOR — Gerry Shiffman, founder of the Empire Area Community Emergency Fund, will be the guest speaker at the Tuesday, Oct. 8, meeting of the Leelanau Independent Women for democratic Action (LIWdA).

The meeting starts at 4 p.m. at the Leelanau School Dining Hall Building. Shiffman, who established the Empire Area Community Emergency Fund in 2011, will discuss how the fund works, its evolution and how other communities might use the project.

ISEA program

SUTTONS BAY — The Inland Seas Education Association will host a program by Casey Rose, project manager at CH2M Hill, the Grand Traverse region’s local wastewater treatment company.

Rose will discuss the importance of treating waste water and give a description of each treatment process. The program starts at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 8, at the ISEA Education Center and Museum. For details, call 271-3077 or visit www.schoolship.org.

Affordable Care

TRAVERSE CITY — Central United Methodist Church will sponsor a presentation titled “How the Affordable Care Act is Supposed to Operate.”

The guest speaker is Bob Miller. He spent 36 years in the field of labor relations, human resources and environmental remediation. For the past 10 years, he has headed up his own human resources consulting company in Traverse City.
