Not always a good fit

Look at all the clothing advertisements you received in the mail and newspapers for the past month and tear out all the pictures of models who are over 60. Now carefully stick those up your nose. Ready? Having any trouble breathing? Of course not.

There are now more people over 65 in this country than people between the ages of 1 and 18. Over 10,000 baby boomers start to draw Social Security each day for an annual total of nearly four million people. Yet clothing companies do nothing to cater to this demographic.

Older men and women of all races are now in, my opinion, the least represented sector of U.S. society based on their presence in clothing ads. This is not just a problem of representation since clothing made for America’s youth are not always literally a good fit for seniors. The senior population represents a huge untapped customer base for clothing stores and outlets which currently ignore this group resulting in an adverse affect their own bottom line.

A proactive approach

As a Cherry Knoll parent I support a learning environment that inspires and encourages the minds of our children to grow without being bound by obsolete technology, failing buildings and safety concerns. I support the reconstruction of Interlochen, Glenn Loomis Montessori and Eastern Elementary. A proactive approach is the only answer.

The reconstruction of Traverse City Central High School Auditorium is long overdue. Children who are inspired by the “arts” and not sports need an auditorium with current technology allowing them an equal opportunity to prepare for college. An auditorium also provides many benefits to the community as a whole.
