Give customers a break

A hundred years ago, Traverse City’s Founding Fathers thought it prudent to purchase land about eight miles outside the city to build a hydroelectric dam to meet the needs of a growing community.

Over the years that parcel proved to be rich in oil and gas. We were told that there wasn’t any money to update the dams or generators, but multiple millions of dollars was found to tear down the dam.

The Record-Eagle reported on the struggle the City Commissioners were having on deciding where to spend those revenues.

Here’s a novel idea: Why not reimburse those people whose homes were damaged due to the flooding from the dam removal? Another idea, why not give back to the Traverse City Light & Power customers?

I’ve been a Cherryland Electric customer since 1980. Almost every year I receive a credit, amounting to about a month’s bill. They give to local charities through their volunteer “round-up” program and then give back to their customers when there’s a surplus.

I’ve not heard of Light & Power giving credits to their customers. But they did make a million dollar “donation” to the defunct “splash pad.”
