n To area parents who took part in Grand Traverse Academy’s annual “A Day in the Life of a Kindergartner” program, meant to give the parents of children who are starting kindergarten in the fall a first-hand look at what it’s like in a kindergarten classroom at the charter school. Parents were to observe the the daily calendar, Spanish instruction and movement activities.

n To Northwestern Michigan Astronomy Club and Grand Traverse Astronomical Society members who hosted a public viewing at the college’s Birmley Road observatory south of Traverse City. Operators were to aim their telescopes on several features, including the planet Jupiter and the Great Orion Nebula. n To friends and family of Scott and Diane Peterson who have set up a You-Caring.com fundraiser site to help offset some of the huge expenses incurred during Sott Peterson’s recovery from an accident in which he was pinned between two vehicles while trying to help a woman whose car had gotten stuck on the shoulder of U.S. 131 in Fife Lake Township. n To Traverse City resident Jane Hayes, this year’s winner of the Sara Hardy Humanitarian Award for her dedication to education and the ideals of equality and diversity. The annual award recognizes Sara Hardy, who was instrumental in establishing the Traverse City Human Rights Commission more than 30 years ago. Hayes is to receive the award at tonight’s meeting of the Traverse City City Commission. Hayes made a career in social services and higher education and served on community boards, including the Great Lakes Community Health Board and the Traverse City Area Public Schools Board. She taught at Grand Valley State University’s School of Social work and was program director for Ferris State University School of Social Work.
