Update on 03/03/2014 historical photo

Historical photo information, provided by readers, for the March 3 image:

- From Barbara Hays Dove: The woman in the photo, my mother, was Mary Powers Spooner (called Polly). She married John T. Hays, II on Sept. 11, 1937, in Chicago. They had met each other in Leland in the 20s and had cottages beside each other. She was from Glencoe, Ill. and he, from Sullivan, Ind.

Her parents were Emily Clark Spooner and Charles Willett Spooner, who built their cottage on N. Lake St. in the 1920s. They had moved to Glencoe from Grand Rapids.

John’s parents were Lucile B. Hays and Hinkle Cain Hays, who discovered Leland a little later than the Spooners. Their house was built in the early 1930s.

Polly and John had three children, John, Emily and Barbara. (I am the one who has retired in Leland.) John died in 1983 (b.1913) and Polly in 1995 (b.1913).

- From Emily Hays Moss: The photo was taken, probably for the Chicago newspapers, to announce the wedding of Polly to our father. We think the photo must have been left in one of the five family cottages on Lake Street in Leland when it was sold.

I have the lace veil, which I wore at my wedding. My niece has the necklace. The dress disintegrated after years in a hot attic.
