Doesn’t get it

Brad Van Dommelen needs a new strategy. He places blame on limiting the number of festivals or supporting increasing fees to festival promoters on a “minority of mostly retired teachers and auto workers who live on pensions who don’t have to worry about making a living” (Dec. 21 Record-Eagle). This strategy has lost considerable traction in recent years. But more importantly, it minimizes the complexity of both our region and the issue.

Van Dommelen is on record as being, “against limits on festivals, higher festival fees, or any city policy that deters economic activity.”

I am grateful I live in a nation where the people elect their representatives to help protect our communities from that mentality.

Van Dommelen stated, “I’ve never lived anywhere where it was so important for people to understand how important tourism is to our community; every other place already gets it.”

Let me be among the first to apologize to Mr. Van Dommelen for not getting it. Of course, having only lived and worked here since 1986, it would be presumptuous of me to apologize for the increasing number of our neighbors across the region who, according to him, also don’t get it.
