Area skiers shine in junior qualifier at Ishpeming

---- — ISHPEMING — Traverse City Central High School skiers put together strong finishes over the weekend at the final Junior National Qualifying (JNQ) races in Ishpeming.

On Saturday, U16 skiers raced a 5K skate race, while U18 and U20 skiers raced a 10K, all on a World Cup level course. Niki Roxbury, 15, finished first in the U16 5K skate race with a time of 18:01.5. In the female U18 10K, Erin Lipp finished second with a time of 30:47.2, while Hannah Davis came in sixth with a time of 32:15.0. In the men’s race, Clay Darling, 16, took sixth with a time of 27:33.9.

Petoskey area skier Sarah Goble won the women’s U18 skate race with a time of 29:49.7. In sixth place in the men’s U16 race, Reid Goble finished with a time of 16:18.4. Representing the Vasa Ski Club, David Butryn, 17, finished seventh with a time of 27:44.8.

On Sunday, Roxbury finished second for U16 skiers in the 1.3K classic sprint with a time of 6:15.35. In the female U18 category, Lipp, with a time of 5:34.28 finished second, while Davis placed sixth with a time of 6:17.61. Clay Darling finished 10th in the men’s U18 race with a time of 4:56.89.

Qualifying skiers will have the opportunity to race at the United States Ski Association Junior National races at the Trapp Family Lodge in Stowe, Vermont, March 1-8. These final JNQ races also allowed Upper and Lower Peninsula skiers to race head to head one last time before the Michigan High School Nordic Ski State Championships to be held at the Vasa Trailhead on Feb. 14-15.
