- To The Goodwill Inn homeless shelter, which as of May 1 will offer ready-made meals to those unable to afford food. The Emergency Meals program will replace the inn’s food pantry. The pantry provides canned and boxed food that requires preparation, but many families have nowhere to cook. “If someone shows up, it doesn’t matter what time of day ...(w)e’ll have food,” said Brandon Seng, manager of Goodwill’s food programs.

- To Grand Traverse Metro Fire Department officials for a pilot program to check for and install free residential smoke detectors. The aim of the Safe Neighborhood Program is to ensure every home in Garfield, East Bay, and Acme townships has two working smoke detectors. Department data showed that in almost 40 percent of residential fires there were no working smoke detectors.

- To organizers of a Mental Health First Aid workshop that will offer ideas on how to respond to people who suffer from depression, severe anxiety, or psychotic disorders. - To Kalkaska Area Interfaith Resources, which took in more than 11,000 pounds of non-perishable food during a recent 24-hour food drive. Kampout for KAIR set up a temporary campground at the Bill Marsh Auto dealership in Kalkaska. The nearly six tons of food easily exceeded last year’s donations of 6,500 pounds.

- To Mary Ann Hendricks and Pam Smith, sewing instructors at the Grow Benzie sewing studio in Benzonia, who arranged for 13 sixth-graders at Platte River Elementary School to receive eight weeks of sewing skills lessons through Grow Benzie, a community nonprofit.

- To music students at Interlochen Arts Academy who made history when they took the stage at Corson Audtiorium with the Grammy Award-winning Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. It was the first time high school students performed with the New York orchestra. The performance also featured composer and singer/songwriter Gabriel Kahane.
