Four arrested in Holiday Inn fight

TRAVERSE CITY — Four accused would-be pugilists at downtown Traverse City's Holiday Inn may soon wish they found a better way to settle their differences.

The Saturday fight was the second time in one week that city police broke up a fight at the Front Street hotel. Traverse City Police Capt. Brian Heffner said officers arrived at 2:15 a.m. to find several individuals fighting in the parking lot.

Holiday Inn general manager Colin Walsh said the individuals weren't hotel guests. He declined to comment further on the fight and another Nov. 17 altercation on hotel property which led to the arrest of a Detroit man.

"It's a police matter," he said.

Heffner said officers on Saturday "targeted" a Thompsonville man, 27, as the most aggressive fighter and arrested him in a bid to calm the fight. But this didn't sit well with a Kingsley woman, 22, who started pushing and pulling on the arresting officer. She too was arrested.

The fight didn't end there -- additional officers arrived and found two individuals still fighting. They arrested a Kingsley man, 25, and then turned their attention to a 33-year-old Mesick man who continued to yell profanities at onlookers and police as his three compatriots sat in squad cars.

Heffner said the fight began when one suspect approached and struck a man in the hotel lobby after they spent the night exchanging glances in Shimmers on the Bay lounge.

The Grand Traverse County prosecutor's office hadn't authorized charges as of this morning. Police seek disorderly conduct charges for the three men and a resisting and obstructing justice charge against the woman.

Holiday Inn was the scene of another fight last week that led to an arrest. Jerry Lee Duhart, 36, was arrested Nov. 17 when officers found he was a wanted parole absconder. He awaits a preliminary examination on a drug charge in 86th District Court on Dec. 5.
