Traverse City: Multi-county chase ends in fatal shooting

TRAVERSE CITY — A 56-year-old Oscoda man was shot and killed in Traverse City overnight after leading police on a multi-county chase and turning a gun on officers, according to Michigan State Police in Cadillac.

According to Lt. David Street, commander of the Cadillac State Police post, the man fled deputies during a patrol stop in Crawford County in the middle of the night. The suspect fled by car and a chase ensued into Grand Traverse County.

A State Police press release said that the chase ended in the front yard of a Traverse City residence, which Street said authorities are not disclosing yet. The man exited his car and confronted officers with a high-powered rifle. He was fatally wounded after Crawford County sheriff's deputies and Traverse City Police fired at him. No officers were wounded.

Patrol units from Crawford, Kalkaska and Grand Traverse counties, the Traverse City Police and Houghton Lake State Police post were involved in the pursuit. More details to come online and in Wednesday's print edition of the Record-Eagle.
