One dead in U.S. 31 crash

GRAWN — A Grawn man died in a two-vehicle crash in Blair Township.

Grand Traverse County sheriff's deputies closed a stretch of U.S. 31 for about three hours today after a Grawn man, 77, pulled his car from the Pioneer Diesel parking lot and collided with a pickup truck driven by a Grawn woman, 33, who was headed east.

The crash occurred at 8:23 a.m. and at least one victim was pinned in their vehicle. Sheriff's Capt. Randy Fewless said the man was pronounced dead at Munson Medical Center. The victim's wife and passenger, 73, remains at Munson with injuries that aren't considered life-threatening.

"She wasn't able to communicate very well with officers," Fewless said.

Authorities withheld their names until family members are notified.

Fewless said the pickup driver also went to Munson but was not seriously injured.

Sheriff's deputies detoured U.S. 31 traffic between West Silver Lake Road and Sawyer Road as crash investigators collected evidence. Fewless said preliminary results indicate the Grawn man didn't check traffic before he pulled from the parking lot.

"Right now looks like a fail to yield violation, which caused the crash," Fewless said.
