Man sentenced in fatal crash

Hedrick gets 23 months for killing man on motorcycle

TRAVERSE CITY — Chad Hedrick sobbed as he spoke to 13th Circuit Judge Philip E. Rodgers about Dale Lovett.

Hedrick, 28, caused a June 5 crash that killed Lovett, of Thompsonville. He turned his car in front of Lovett, who was on a motorcycle as he drove along Karlin Road near the Green Lake Township park.

"Words cannot express how sorry I am ... I take full responsibility for the accident and for that day," he said. "There is not a day that goes by that I don't think about Dale Lovett, his family, or the consequences of my actions."

Rodgers sentenced Hedrick to minimum of 23 months in prison on a count of attempted operating with a revoked or suspended license causing death. He pleaded guilty on Sept. 10.

Hedrick, who drove a Buick Park Avenue, turned into the park from the south lane and in front of Lovett, who drove north. The vehicles collided, and Lovett, who wore a helmet, was thrown from his motorcycle. He died at Munson Medical Center.

Hedrick never had a valid Michigan driver's license. He was licensed to drive in Florida because he used to live there, but that license was suspended after a citation and never reactivated because Hedrick didn't pay fees.

Lovett's family did not come to the sentencing. Hedrick's attorney advocated for a lower sentence, but Rodgers stressed that the crime took a life.

"All that promise of future joy, benefit, pain, sorrow that was Mr. Lovett's is gone. It's done," he said.
