GT Co. officials issue advisory for flood victims

staff reports

TRAVERSE CITY -- Grand Traverse County Health Department officials issued a health advisory for property owners affected by Boardman River flooding.

Saturday’s flood beneath Brown Bridge Dam resulted from failures apparently connected to a "dewatering station" that was supposed to gradually release water from Brown Bridge Pond, a project that was supposed to take more than two weeks to complete. Instead, the pond completely emptied over a 4- to 5-hour period during Saturday’s breach.

County health officials stated the following in their advisory:

"Water from wells which were flooded is unsafe and should not be used for drinking or cooking, brushing teeth, dishwashing or clothes washing unless boiled for 10 minutes. If possible, obtain water from a municipal source or purchase bottled water. Before normal resumption of your water well, the well needs to be properly chlorinated and the water tested by a qualified laboratory."
