TRAVERSE CITY -- A 36-year-old man drove his truck head-on into a police vehicle near Seventh and Maple streets.
Traverse City police received a report of a motorist driving erratically near the intersection at around 12:30 a.m. Officer Tim Smith attempted to stop the truck and the driver stopped briefly, then accelerated and collided with the police car.
Smith was treated at Munson Medical Center for minor back and neck injuries and released, police Capt. Mike Ayling said.
The driver of the truck is from Traverse City. He is at Munson Medical Center for evaluation, though Ayling said he does not believe the man is there because of injuries sustained in the accident.
A police dog in the car at the time of the crash was not injured. The police vehicle sustained "pretty good damage," Ayling said.
