Traverse City manager to make $100K a year to start

TRAVERSE CITY — Traverse City’s likely new city manager will earn $100,000 a year to start and could raise that to $110,000 by the end of a proposed three-year contract.

A city commission committee negotiated the contract Wednesday afternoon with Jered Ottenwess, 34, currently city manager for Ishpeming in the Upper Peninsula. The contract is contingent on a background check expected to be completed Friday, with full city commission action on May 20.

Ottenwess would replace retiring City Manager Ben Bifoss, who earns about $102,000 annually after four years with the city. Bifoss leaves June 28 but the earliest Ottenwess can start is mid-July.

Ottenwess also will receive three weeks of vacation, a $250 monthly car allowance, and $5,000 in relocation expenses. He can earn a $5,000 raise at the end of years one and two with a satisfactory performance evaluation.
