LELAND — Leland Public School students sided with Democratic candidates in a mock election, but vote tallies for students from nine other northern Michigan schools won’t be available until Nov. 5.
The mock election involved more than 1,000 students who cast votes for real political candidates. Participating Leland students chose President Barack Obama over challenger Mitt Romney by a 55 to 31 count. They supported U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow, 67 votes, over Pete Hoekstra, who received 10 votes, and Gary McDowell beat U.S. Rep. Dan Benishek, 41 votes to 38, in the race for the Michigan congressional seat in the 1st District. In the state House race for the 101st District, students voted for Allen O’Shea, 57, to Ray Franz, 29.
The remaining vote tallies for participating students from other schools were compiled by computer and entered into a statewide database. Those results will be available Nov. 5 at the Michigan Government Television website: www.mgtv.org.
