TRAVERSE CITY — Grand Traverse County conducted an initial test of a new emergency notification system.
Greg Bird, the county’s emergency management director, said a test of the CodeRED system on Tuesday rang roughly 25,000 phones and sent hundreds of emails and text messages. CodeRED is a new emergency notification system that allows officials to contact residents about emergencies.
“The point of the test was not only to test the system but also get word out to get people enrolled,” Bird said.
Residents can register through Grand Traverse County’s website.
Bird said the system will be used for severe emergencies in which officials need to give out or ask for information. He said these could be tornado warnings, lost children, water main breaks or county road closures from severe weather.
