Man accused of assaulting girlfriend

TRAVERSE CITY — A Traverse City man is accused of assaulting and torturing his pregnant girlfriend.

Police arrested the suspect, 21, on Sunday after his girlfriend checked into Munson Medical Center for a ruptured eardrum. She told officers her boyfriend was upset with her pregnancy, locked her in their home from Saturday to Sunday afternoon, threatened her with loaded guns and struck her several times in her abdomen.

Grand Traverse County Prosecutor Bob Cooney said Monday he’s reviewing the case. Police sought felony charges of aggravated assault, unlawful imprisonment and torture.

City police Capt. Jeff O’Brien said the victim was five weeks pregnant and received help from a friend who joined her at the hospital. He said the suspect also appeared at the hospital and was arrested.

“We interviewed him there at the hospital,” he said.

O’Brien said he didn’t know the fetus’ condition.
