TRAVERSE CITY — Police arrested a Traverse City man who claimed to hear voices that told him to blow up his apartment.
Authorities were dispatched to the Bay Hill Apartments complex Monday at 12:30 a.m. The suspect, 53, told police he didn't want to live anymore and left his stove burners open, he said Traverse City Police Capt. Brian Heffner.
"He said he turned on the gas hoping it would eventually ignite and blow up the apartment complex," Heffner said.
Traverse City firefighters found the man's apartment was completely filled with gas. Heffner said firefighters turned off the gas supply.
Heffner said the suspect told officers he heard voices that told him to blow up his apartment building. The arresting officer requested a mental evaluation be conducted before the man's arraignment on an arson charge in 86th District Court.
