Food trucks get green light in Traverse City

Traverse City commissioners gave food trucks the OK to roll into downtown this summer.

The commission on a 5-2 vote on Monday passed an ordinance that allows up to two mobile food vendors to operate year-round on four city parking lots near downtown and on State Street between Union and Pine streets.

Up to two food trucks may also operate on some streets near Northwestern Michigan College, Munson Medical Center, the Civic Center and the city's larger parks. Vendors will pay $1,225 annually to park on city and private property, $725 for city property only, and $500 for private property only.

The ordinance passed after seven months of debate and compromise. It goes into effect May 16 and will be evaluated in October.
