---- — TRAVERSE CITY — A backpack with assorted knives, ammunition and a mess kit found on the side of an access drive to Traverse City West Senior High School led to a school lockdown for about 20 minutes.

A school maintenance worker cutting the grass came upon the bag Thursday at about 3:20 p.m. near Gallagher Road on a curve by the baseball fields. School officials alerted the Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Department. Deputies took about 20 minutes to search the grounds and determined there was no imminent threat to student safety, said Christine Guitar, spokeswoman for Traverse City Area Public Schools. As many as 150 students were on the grounds for sports and band practices.

Guitar said it appeared the pack may have been thrown or fallen from a car as opposed to someone sitting out on the grounds with it.

“Of course every incident is serious and taken seriously, but we are not concerned at this point and will leave it up to authorities to complete their investigation,” Guitar said.

Sheriff’s department officials said the investigation will remain open while they attempt to identify who owns the bag.
