Nurse accused of stealing childrens' medication

KALKASKA — A home care nurse faces child abuse charges after allegedly diluting and stealing medication from three Kalkaska County children for whom she cared.

Christina Neeley, 35, of Grayling, has been bound over to 46th Circuit Court in Kalkaska on felony charges of larceny and obtaining a controlled substance by fraud, and three misdemeanor counts of fourth-degree child abuse. An arraignment and pretrial is set for Wednesday at 9 a.m.

Kalkaska County Sheriff’s Department reports state Munson Medical Center staff in March informed the children’s guardians that their medication was being diluted.

Neeley admitted to investigators that for two weeks she diluted the prescriptions with water “to hide the fact that she was taking it,” the report stated.

Sheriff’s officials redacted medical information on the children and Neeley from the reports because of privacy concerns. Officials would not comment on whether substance abuse problems were a potential factor in the drug thefts.

Undersheriff Abe Devol said Neeley was arrested in 2010 for operating a vehicle under the influence. He said the sheriff’s department has not seen a similar case involving a home care nurse.

“This was an unique investigation done by our officer,” he said.

The police report states Neeley worked in the Clearwater Township home for more than a year with Caring Touch Nursing Inc.

Gayle Willett, owner of the private duty nursing company, said Neeley worked as a registered nurse with the company but was released.

“There was an incident that occurred and she was let go that day,” she said.

Neeley’s attorney Thomas Seger would not comment on the pending case.
