Women's Resource Center chief resigns

TRAVERSE CITY — The executive director of the Women’s Resource Center resigned.

Jo Bullis started with the organization as a volunteer in 1989, became a program director in 1992 and executive director in 2006. She recently notified the board of directors of her decision to resign, board president Linda Smyka said.

“She indicated to us that she was at a point where she just thought a resignation would be a good idea,” Smyka said.

Board member Juliette Schultz will temporarily fill the role as interim executive director.

“She has a very deep-seated commitment to the organization and a lot of enthusiasm,” Smyka said of Schultz. “I think she has an interest in being the permanent director as well, but we will be doing a search.”

Bullis was instrumental in unifying law enforcement agencies’ handling of domestic violence victims, Smyka said.

“She saw the organization from many different angles and I think she brought that experience,” Smyka said. “We are immensely appreciative of all of Jo’s contributions.”

The board will evaluate job descriptions of the resource center’s executive director, program director and fund development director to see if there is a better way to serve the community, Smyka said.
