Escaped inmate found in Blair, arrested

TRAVERSE CITY — Grand Traverse County sheriff’s deputies found a jail inmate who walked away from his work release two months ago.

Robert Alan McCann, 46, of Traverse City, was arrested Thursday on a warrant for a felony charge of escape from jail. Undersheriff Nate Alger said a deputy went to pursue a lead on McCann’s whereabouts at a Blair Township residence on Scotch Pine Drive and found himself face-to-face with the escapee.

“(McCann) came willingly out of the residence,” Alger said.

The arrests marks the end of a two-month search for McCann, who didn’t return to the jail on June 29 from his work release at the Wash and Go Car Wash near Williams Chevrolet. He originally was arrested June 14 on a probation violation from a domestic violence charge.

Alger said McCann was within days of being released from jail at the time he walked away from work release. He said deputies will interview McCann to find out what the escapee did during his two months on the lam.

“He had done pretty good job of laying low,” Alger said.

McCann now faces a felony charge with a maximum two-year penalty.
