Asbestos requires new bidding process

SUTTONS BAY — Leelanau County commissioners rescheduled a meeting about the removal of a vacant house on a Superfund site.

Commissioners planned to meet today about approving bids to remove a vacant dwelling from the former Grand Traverse Overall Supply Company off Cherry Bend Road in Elmwood Township. But original bidding documents did not mention asbestos in the house that needs to be removed, Leelanau County Administrator Chet Janik said.

Asbestos removal will require companies to re-estimate their bids before commissioners can vote. The county will accept bids through Nov. 12.

County officials rescheduled the meeting for Nov. 13 at 8:30 a.m., before the regularly scheduled county board executive committee meeting.
