Thief makes off with 10 propane tanks in Karlin

KARLIN — A man who recently had 10 propane tanks stolen from his Karlin business said the theft is a testament to tough economic times.

“I assume someone couldn’t afford gas and needed it for heating and cooking,” said Frank Sorna, owner of Karlin Market & Deli near Interlochen. “It shows the need of our people; our economy’s the culprit, really, to drive this kind of thing.”

The Blue Rhino propane canisters were heisted sometime overnight early this week from the business at 7464 Nessen Road, Grand Traverse Lt. Bryan Marrow said in a press release.

Sorna believes the thief used a steel rod to pry open a lock on the cage that enclosed the tanks.

The tanks sell for $49.95 each, putting the business back about $500.

Sorna said eight tanks were stolen from his business a year ago.
