TRAVERSE CITY —
Flood waters that threatened Ed and Mary Flees' home just downstream from the breached Brown Bridge Dam began to recede late this afternoon, and signaled a possible end to their peril.
"It's been going down for about the last hour," Mary Flees said shortly before 5 p.m. "It's down about 5 feet now."
Flees said her home had no apparent flood damage, but it sits on an earthen berm and she didn't know if the swollen Boardman River had infiltrated the berm. The couple came close to evacuating their long-time home "all the time" Flees said, but stuck it out.
"I'm relieved a lot right now," she said. "But not to the point of closing both eyes."
