TRAVERSE CITY — Leelanau County authorities closed a stretch of M-72 after snowy conditions cut visibility to zero.

Undersheriff Steve Morgan said two crashes with injuries led authorities to close the highway between South Maple City Road and Newman Road at 2 p.m. He said a pedestrian in a five-vehicle crash suffered a non-life threatening injury.

"My understanding is the pedestrian got out to help and got clipped by a car," Morgan said.

Morgan said another person suffered a shoulder injury in a two-vehicle crash on M-72.

Deteriorating weather also contributed to a spate of traffic crashes in the region. In Grand Traverse County, roads affected by crashes include Five Mile and Holiday roads, South Garfield Road and Three Mile Road and numerous intersections along US-31.

Jason Torrey, Grand Traverse County's central dispatch deputy director, said the number of crashes picked up significantly following a relatively quiet morning. He said at least nine crashes, and counting, required emergency services.
