BENZONIA — Mary Mortenson is grateful for her job at Magna Interior Trim Components.
Mortenson sews materials used for interior car parts in new vehicles, a job that allows her to be near family in Frankfort rather than driving to Traverse City for work.
“I wanted to be close to my daughter … this allowed me to stay home and be near my family, where I wanted to be,” Mortenson said of her job.
Mortenson labors at one of the fastest-growing businesses in northern Michigan. Magna soared from 70 employees three years ago to 240 today. Another 100 temporary workers are on-site training for full-time positions, and Magna is looking to hire yet another 100 people from the Grand Traverse region.
The expansion is fueled in part by an $822,000 grant from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation that targets the Benzonia facility and another Magna manufacturing complex in St. Clair.
Magna General Manager Joseph McCluskey II said there’s room for even more growth.
“We have about 100 more openings,” McCluskey said. “There are jobs available.”
