EMPIRE — An Okemos man who said he swerved his vehicle around a stray deer and into a tree found himself behind bars after Leelanau County authorities said he drove drunk.
The Empire Township crash occurred Friday at 1:46 p.m. when the driver, 56, left the roadway. Authorities said the driver said he tried to avoid hitting a deer on M-22 near Stormer Road and ended up hitting a crash.
Deputies put the driver through field sobriety tests after they said he showed signs of intoxication. They arrested him and booked into Leelanau County’s jail on a requested operating while intoxicated charge.
Jail officials released the man on a $100 interim bond. He’s scheduled for an 86th District Court appearance next week.
