Intruder awakes Suttons Bay Township homeowner

SUTTONS BAY — A noisy intruder who awoke a Suttons Bay Township homeowner remains on the loose.

Sheriff’s deputies responded to the South Shore Drive home on Tuesday about 12:10 a.m. after the homeowner called 911 to report a man inside his home. The homeowner heard noises in his kitchen and went downstairs in time to see a man exit his garage.

A deputy’s K-9 tracked the suspect to an area west of Peck Road, but lost the scent where authorities believe the suspect left in a vehicle. Authorities found a liquor bottle stolen from the residence along the suspect’s path.

The suspect is believed to be a man in his 20s who wore a dark shirt and gray sweatpants.

Traverse City, others recognized as Tree City USA

TRAVERSE CITY—Traverse City, the Village of Kingsley and Frankfort are among 125 Michigan communities certified as “Tree City USA” for their work in 2013.

The recognition goes to municipalities that promote community forestry. Cities and villages must have a board or department that oversees tree care, a tree ordinance, an official Arbor Day celebration and proclamation, and a public tree care budget of at least $2 per capita, according to a press release from the Department of Natural Resources.

All three of the municipalities in northwest lower Michigan were recognized in past years.

The Tree City USA program is run by the Arbor Day Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to planting trees.Antrim County bodies still unidentified
