Authorities search doctor's office

ELK RAPIDS — An Elk Rapids doctor is the focus of an investigation by village police, Traverse Narcotics Team officers and federal drug agents.

Authorities offered scant details about a warrant search conducted today at a doctor's River Street office. Elk Rapids Police Chief Tom Emerson didn't return calls for comment. TNT Detective Lt. Daniel King referred all questions to Emerson.

"It's an ongoing investigation," said village police Officer Tom Near.

Workers at several River Street businesses today spotted officers and patrol cars clustered around a nearby storefront.

Elk Rapids Family Dentistry office manager Tammy Miller said it appears authorities searched an office occupied by Robert E. Green, a doctor of osteopathic medicine.

A Record-Eagle reporter's call to Green's office went unreturned.

Louis Ghiringhelli, owner of River Pharmacy on Ames Street, said he's known Green for 30 years. He said Green wrote prescriptions for all kinds of drugs, including painkillers, that patients filled at his office.

“He has a tendency to write more controlled substances than (a) normal practice, but those could be the patients he sees,” Ghiringhelli said.

A press release stated agents at the federal Drug Enforcement Agency's Detroit office assisted in the investigation. DEA spokesman Rich Isaacson said he couldn't confirm or deny the agency's involvement.
