TRAVERSE CITY — Supporters of the Traverse City Opera House have asked city commissioners for permission to mount a large marquee on the front of the historic city-owned building.
The City Opera House Heritage Association, the group which operates the performance venue under a contract with the city commission, submitted concept drawings to city officials last week. The proposed structure would jut out about 15 feet from the downtown building on East Front Street and require the removal of one street tree.
Opera House officials said the marquee is needed to generate a "sense of arrival" for patrons.
City Manager Jered Ottenwess said he tentatively scheduled the proposal for consideration by city commissioners at their May 19 meeting.
