Passing deputy spots man drink beer at gas pumps

Deputy sees man drink beer at gas pumps

SUTTONS BAY — A Northport man found himself in a patrol car after authorities said he swigged a beer at an Elmwood Township gas pump.

The suspect, 31, is scheduled to appear in 86th District Court Friday. He was a passenger in a vehicle parked at the pumps early April 26 when a passing Leelanau County sheriff’s deputy spotted him drink from a beer bottle.

The deputy turned around and the suspect got back into the back seat.

A six-pack sat on the floor between the man’s feet and the deputy smelled burnt marijuana, authorities said. The deputy found a marijuana pipe on the man’s seat and the suspect gave up a baggie of marijuana.

Authorities requested charges of an open intoxicant and possession of marijuana. The suspect is released on a $5,000 personal recognizance bond.
