UPS employee reaches settlement with union

TRAVERSE CITY — A Traverse City woman will get back some of her union dues plus interest after she filed charges against the labor group alleging it violated Michigan's "right-to-work" law.

Lisa Plamondon, who works for UPS, reached a settlement with the Teamsters Union after she filed charges with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) alleging the union and her employer wrongly took dues out of her paycheck.

Plamondon, who has worked for UPS for about 30 years, had union dues and fees deducted from her paycheck for years after she left the Teamsters Local 406 because of a clause in her contract.

The clause expired in August 2013, and Plamondon requested the union cease the deductions in November, according to documents filed with the NLRB. The union denied the request, and subsequent ones, until March 2014.

Plamondon did not return requests for comment this afternoon.

Plamondon, with help from the National Right to Work Foundation, filed charges in December against the union and UPS. The company took the money out of her paycheck and passed it on to the union, said Anthony Riedel, a spokesman for the foundation.

"They're like the middle man in the dues process," Riedel said of UPS.

The NLRB accepted a settlement between Plamondon and the union. Union officials agreed to pay her the $311 it deducted since November 2013 plus $2 interest.

The National Labor Relations Board also filed a complaint against UPS.

Officials at Teamsters Local 406 declined to comment, said Ron Holzgen, the secretary-treasurer and principal executive officer at the union's local office.
