TRAVERSE CITY — Local attorneys expressed surprise and shock at accusations that their colleague Clarence Gomery solicited the murder of another prominent Traverse City-area lawyer.
"Unbelievable," said Paul Jarboe, a Traverse City defense attorney who watched Gomery's arraignment in 86th District Court today. "It's just unbelievable. I guess sometimes the truth is stranger than fiction. It's a sad day for the legal community."
Most attorneys heard about the accusations this morning.
"My reaction is I'm saddened that anybody would have to go through this process," said Traverse City attorney Craig Elhart. "I've known Clarence for a long time, and it's difficult for me to comprehend why this would occur."
Gomery owns the Gomery and Associates law firm. Court documents state Gomery met a man at the firm's Eighth Street office and offered him $20,000 to kill Christopher Cooke, another local attorney.
